INSPIRING MEN TO ROCK THE BOAT.
Meet MINI Mo Bro Nic Holas. He's a writer, creative, gay men's health activist and the co-founder of not-for-profit organisation TIM.
Nic's drive to change the face of men's health has seen him represent Australia at global conferences and his words are frequently featured in publications such as The Guardian, Hello Mr, Star Observer and Junkie.
We cued Solange’s new album and went for a drive with this passionate storyteller to ask him a few questions about how we can change the conversation about men’s health.
> Why do you think it is important for men to talk to each other about their health?
No human is an island, and feeling a sense of connection and belonging to our community, whoever they might be is vital for our overall health and wellbeing. Feeling comfortable enough to bring up how we’re doing, on that day or in the big picture, is the first step in kick-starting that ongoing conversation.
> What do you believe we can do to help future generations to have open conversations about their physical and mental health?
We can be bolder and braver than the generation that came before us. Whether it is signaling to a friend that you’re there for them to chat, opening up to a group of people in the same situation as us, or calling out someone trying to squash another person’s safety. All these things will help the next generation to take our good work even further.
> When a mate needs your support how do you connect with them to help their situation?
The first step is just to let them know you’re there. I shoot them a text or Facebook message, bring up a common interest, and start carving out some space for us to chat about what’s going on. If they are ready to talk about what’s going on, I make sure I have the time to really be there.
>How does exercise benefit your lifestyle and wellbeing?
For me, starting the day with some sort of exercise is the best way to begin the day on the right path, although I don’t do it as often as I’d like. A few days in, you really notice how not exercising is making you feel. That said, I also think too much gym culture can help people feel never-quite-good-enough. Everything in moderation.
> Who are you hoping to inspire from your Movember involvement and what's your Mo message of wisdom that you'd like to pass on?
I’m hoping to inspire guys to keep their Mo’s 365 days of the year! Be the Freddie Mercury you want to see in the world. I think that for a lot of guys, they’re worried about rocking the boat. They see a mate who could benefit from a friendly chat about something serious, but they don’t want to rock the boat. That could be about his health and wellbeing, or it could be how he’s treating other people in his life. Sometimes, you have to rock the boat and not wait for someone else to do it. Fortune favours the bold.
